A Rose By Any Other Name? No Way!`?

Alfred Hitchcock spent months and months researching about names. Names of protagonists in his films were changed many times in many script drafts in an effort to come up with just the right moniker.

With as American a name as Huckabee, the guy is a shoe-in. It doesn`t matter what he stands for?

Just remember that `Hit`ler changed his name. Gersh`win` changed his name. Many film stars as well as politicians changed their names to reflect a positive identity and association.

So what`s your feeling. Is it a case of a rose by any other name? Or no way?

I remember reading an article back in the 1970's for a Political Science class that was based on this exact topic. In the author's analysis of voter's he determined that, if the voter does not know anything about the candidates other than their names, the voter will be attracted to Irish and Jewish surnames.

To demonstrate this, the author had two friends run for an obscure positions (like party committee representative or something). One friend's last name was Schwartz and the other friend's last name was Murphy. Even though there were 12 other people running the voters chose Schwartz and Murphy based solely on their names.

The author felt that the American voter did not feel threatened by Irish and Jewish surnames and that there was a strong voter recognition and familiarity with them. That there was an association between these ethnic names and voter confidence.
Reply:i'd never thought of that. though, i do see sense in changing your name to reflect positively. if you're an evil guy trying to do something bad, you want to sound good, don't you?

like with my name. I'm a girl and my name means 'Grace of God'. i'm not a bad person or anything, but i just hate my name because it's hippocritical- i'm an atheist and my name means the grace of something i have no belief in, so i make people call me 'Gavvy', which is basically my nickname.
Reply:Huckabee is doomed to be a hillbilly clodhopper. What an awful name! Remember Joseph Stalin instead of Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili. Take a look on Yahoo answers column "Pregnancy" and "Baby Names". We've got a lot of babies getting some horrible monikers.
