Be careful when you pick him up. If you are going to panic then do not do it. You pose more danger to the spider than he does to you. A small fall(more than a few inches) can split the exoskeleton and kill the spider.

Chilean Rose's are pretty slow and docile. If he is rearing up that means he is agitated and you should leave him alone.

Chilean Rose bites will hurt, but they are nothing to be afraid of(unless you are allergic). Be calm when handling him and do not panic.

Personally there is really no reason to handle a spider. I have a Chilean Rose and never handle her since I do not want to hurt her.

Be careful, and if you do not feel ready then do not pick her up.
Reply:You just posted this and I jsut answered it- read your other post. You are not going to get bit unless you freak out- rose hairs can barely bite a person anyways- their mouth is really small.
Reply:You've had a spider for 3 years and never touch it? How have you not ever touched it when you have to clean the cage out? It's definitely not going to like you touching it since it hasn't been picked up in years. You need to make sure and not drop it because many breeds are fragile and can die from a short fall. Just move very slowly when going to pick it up. Also, putting it in the fridge for 10 minutes actually helps it calm down; however, you have to be careful about this because some tarantulas react differently and this can kill them.
Reply:You know, you don't have to pick him up. I picked up one of mine once at the petshop I was buying it from. Other then that, handling is only when absolutely necessary. Most of the time, I even move them from one cage to another using a glass with a piece of cardboard slid underneath it..

They aren't really a pet that enjoys being handled. They aren't like a cat, dog or ferret that almost needs to be handled daily. Tarantulas are perfectly happy not being touched at all..

I have 45 tarantulas and don't handle them at all. I treat them like tropical fish. They are fun to observe, but I give them their space.

PS, when he raises his front legs, that's a threat display. Don't even bother trying to pick one up when it's doing that. You've been warned and you'll just get bit and could end up dropping the tarantula. That's their way of saying "leave me alone!"
