Rose Stems are bare. Leaves have Blackspot?
Black spot is caused by a fungus, witch can be due to plants getting to much water. All infected limbs and leaves should be discarded, even the ones on the ground. Spray the plants and ground with an organic copper-sulfate fungicide. Or use a synthetic fungicide registered for roses that contains the active ingredient captan or mancozeb. Take action now, black spot can cover a plant in no time. This spring when cutting flowers, cut the stem were the leaves or in groups of five, this will make the bloom faster. Tend them daily and keep dead wood and flowers pruned Roses require a lot of T.L.C to keep them healthy. A quote, "A Rose is a Rose be it known by any other name"
Reply:Leave them alone until about December. Then cut them to 1-foot canes. Thin out the stems that grow toward the center of the bush. Also, cut off any stems that are coming from the roots (coming up from the dirt) instead of coming off the main branch. And, cut off any dead wood. They'll be good to go in spring.
