Some one I know has a Lenten rose and I have a perfect place in the garden for one, but its February and you can only sow the seeds from September to November, I don’t fancy waiting that long so is there a faster way of propagation?
(there isn’t really a good place to take a cutting the only type of stem really is a stem of flowers with a couple of small leafs, if I took a leaf of and treat that as a cutting (the leaf is like on a stem) would it strike and shoot from the sides?

2. my mother used to take a piece of a rose, push it into the garden and turn a jar over the piece to help maintain moisture %26amp; protect it from the elements. She had good success starting roses this way.

Do rose hair tarantulas bite?
I just got a rose hair tarantula %26amp; i was wondering if anyone knows if they bite.......or any information i can get on them would be great! Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend you read through this care sheet on them since most pet stores and online care sheets are totally inaccurate and fail to take into consideration where this tarantula is from. Most places tell you to mist them regularly, but, these tarantulas are from a very dry climate. Misting them regularly can cause fungus on the book lungs..

Blue Rose Of Sharon?
Has anyone had success with the blue version of the rose of sharon in zones cold as 4?

Reply:I think it's an up grade from the Purple Rose of Cairo, but I don't think it can match the Tulip of Toledo with the new Pentium chip.
Reply:I had one last a few years. Then I think we had a drought and lost it. I think the purple does much better and is more tolerant of our weather extremes. I also have a white one that does great.

Reply:If you can try to make a micro-climate for it it should be ok. By this I mean someway growing it so it will be proteced adn think it is in a higher zone.
Sometimes this can be done by growing it close to the house especially if it also has an evergreen or fence to the side so the winds don't get to it.

I have Blue Bird, the old variety, and it is pretty blue. Very fertile though, and as a surprise, this year in the old stand of Blue Bird, a couple of young plants bloomed for the first time--one a true, beautiful pink, and a pure white one! I don't even think that there is another Rose of Sharon in my neighborhood, guess it is just a gift of Nature. I garden in Zone 6b
Reply:Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5-8. They are pretty easily damaged by colder weather, and definitely respond poorly to drought, especially in the fall. I'd look as some newer cultivars, that have been released from the National Arboretum. They are reported to be 'hardier' than older cultivars. I don't see a 'blue' one, but perhaps you might find one you like?
They are named for Greek myths (Aphrodite, Minerva, Diana, Helene... not sure if there are others).
I live in USDA hardiness zone 5, and have no problems with the cold here (drought yes). If you heavily mulch the plant, maybe protect it with a wind screen, you might have luck. I would definitely say, eventually the weather is likely to catch up with you.

Here's the reasons why there's a spread that large for a BCS bowl game-
1. Illinois has no passing game. making them one dimensional.
2. Yes Juice is a good QB, and will develop over time, but USC did a very good job in containing the best spread QB this year, in Dennis Dixon.
3. USC is top 3 in Rush defense, and is very experienced all around.
4. USC has the one of the quickest defenses around, while the Ilini has an experience offensive front, they haven't seen a defense this quick this year.
5. Illini's pass defense is not exceptional, meaning Booty and his much improved WR's should get plenty of yards, and opportunties to go deep.
6. USC offense as a whole is good all around w/ their blue-chips.
Personally, Illinois should never have been chosen for any BCS bowl. It would have been nice to see a USC-Georgia or -Oklahoma game.
If the Illini do upset the Trojans, it would be because the Trojans did it to themselves by not taking this game seriously. But I think they've learned from their Stanford loss.

Can I put a Floyd Rose tremolo on my Fender Strat (Mexican made) without doing any woodwork?? if not how much might it cost for a professional to do it for me?? Thanks!

Your Strat will need to be modified for the Floyd system. The system extends back towards the tail and some routing must be done so the tremelo will work. It wouldn't be hard to do, if you have some woodworking experience and want to refinish the part that gets routered.

The last time I was in SF ate at a resturant called the Stinking Rose. I believe it was in the North Beach area. Does anyone know if it is still there? And what do you think of the food?

Virgin Rose Special Effects hair dye.?
I have beatiful thick medium dark brown hair, when washed, it feels like silk. I purchased some Special Effects Virgin Rose hair dye. My mom swears it's going to ruin my hair, hers is ruined because she over dyes it. Is just once or twice going to ruin my hair?

Without putting a small fence around them I don't know what else you would do to keep them from eating them.(maybe shoot em j/k) The flowers and leaves will come back though as long as you protect them or the animals will just keep eating them.

Check the fertilizer you're using...My guess is that it contains a lot of nitrogen...OK quick fertilizer 101-There a always three numbers on any fertilizer you buy; the first is always nitrogen, the second is always phosphorus, and the third is always potash...Nitrogen, makes a plant grow up, and turn green, phosphorus, promotes strong root growth, and blooming; and potash is an all around tonic...When fertilizing blooming plants I fertilize with a normal fertilizer the first 2-3 times, then I switch to a "bloom booster" these products vary considerably; look for a product where the second number is higher than the first...Also it sounds like you're OVER fertilizing...plant food, and fertilizer, are the same thing...you might want to stop feeding(fertilizing)...

I have several rose plants in my front yard. normally, all the care they need is to be kept watered, and they will continue to bloom through the summer. this year I did something different. just before they bloomed, I plucked off all of last year's dead flowers. They bloomed up real good,. but now that those blooms have died off, there are no new buds on any of them, just the green bushes remain. Should I have left last year's dead flowers on? Why would removing them cause a one time blooming this year? or is it something completely un-related to removing last year's dead flowers?

Going to pick up my girlfriend for the school dance tomorrow, and I was wondering whether I should get her a single rose or like a bunch of roses? We've been going out for about 3 weeks now.(I'm 17, she's 16)

However, have a bunch of roses waiting in the back of your car (make sure she doesn't see them!!!) and then give the rest of them to her when you drop her back off at home. When you walk her to her door after the dance have the boquet of roses behind ur back. Just b4 you get to the door, stop her with a tug of her hand and give her the rest of them. You see by doing this the single rose b4 the dance will have a great symbolism and at the same time leave her wanting more. Then by giving her the rest at the end of the night, it will be the icing on the cake to a wonderful evening. OHHH but i forgot...after you give her the rest of the roses..and i mean like immediately after, cup her cheek with ur hand and kiss her gently on the lips. This will leave a long lasting impression in her mind.

Where may I purchase a black rose bush?
I know that in the garden of roses, there is a black rose bush. The rose itself is so dark it's black in color. Not purple, or deep red. Is this rose still in existance.

Climbing Rose Bush budded but now looks dead after cold spell.?
I planted 2 climbing rose bushes on a trellis in my yard last May...they were well established and full in the fall and should flower this year. The vines began to bud leaves and then we got a cold spell (central IL). The leaves all died and now we have had about 2 consecutive warm weeks and there are no new buds of foliage. Any experience with this? Is the plant dormant or dead? How to tell? Thanks.

It may take awhile before it puts out new growth. Or it may be dead. You can scrape the bark and see if there is any green, living tissue underneath. Or you can wait until mid May and see what happens.
This has been a possitively freaky year. A warm January, followed by a pretty darn cold February. Then an early warm up, with temps in late March/early April in the 70's and even 80's (20 to 30 degrees above normal), then followed by an unprecidented freeze in April - not a brief one, but 7, 8 days, getting down to the low 20's...at which point covering really doesn't help much.

Book Rose Madder by Stephen King...I love love love the book and have read it a million times and I want them to make the movie so bad...anyone else think they should or will??

His books just don't translate well onto film apart from maybe "The Shining" and "The Green Mile"
Others like "The Stand" were a disaster. Teh stand was especially disapointing for me as I saw so much potential for an awesome movie there, and it is a great story.
My advise - if you really loved the book don't hope for a movie - casue the film will be dissapointing

Desert Rose?
We have a desert rose, have had it for a few years now. It's very healthy, long green stems with nice green leaves, but it has never flowered! Is there something else we have to do to it to get it to bloom? It's sitting in a room where it gets indirect sunlight, but the room is nice and sunny most of the day.

Roses like to have some food once in a while in order to bloom. Look for a fertilizer with the words "rose food" in the title. Roses also do need a bit of direct sunlight every day in order to bloom. They will survive in bright light but probably not bloom. Good luck!

my guitar have a floyd rose on it, i change all my strings
when i tune it, i don't even know how i did it, i tuned to half step down to the regular tuning everytime. can't get any closer.

My rose hair tarantula is making a lot of webs all over her cage this is the first time shes done this?
She molted for the first (that I know of) last month now she is very differnt she is faster, eats more and has made webs all over the bottom of here cage my mom said it may be her nest but I don't know. can some one WITH a rose hair or experince with one help

Reply:I wouldn't so much worry about the color- pick any image you like, and tell the artist to do it in black, and it will come out fine! There's a million regular color roses like red, purple, etc so even if you can't find it in black it'll be easy to just change!

I planted some rose bushes 2 weeks ago and the buds that were there when i bought them have bloomed fully and are now dried out and limp. Do i prune them or let them fall on their own?

Yes. They not only look ugly but they are also wasting energy from the plant which is going to try to make seeds from them. Snip them off or pick them off and you will get a lot more buds and flowers (called "deadheading" when you get rid of the old blooms).

I live in So. California, and just bought a pretty pink miniature rose. It's outdoors now. Should I give it full sun? I want repot it in a larger pot. How soon should I do this? Thanks.

I have had potted miniature roses in both Indiana and North Carolina growing in the landscape. They always did fine. It is too late to put in the landscape now, but next spring would be ideal. They love the sun. If kept indoors, you can repot at any time.

Anywhere between 3-4 feet and are intended to be landscape plants so if you repot it then go for a really big one like a half barrel or something because their roots need room to spread. The flowers are small, but the bush can get pretty tall. Since you live in So. Cal, there is no rush. These roses can handle anything a average sized rose can handle. Just make sure you give it at least 6 hours of sun light and water it at the base to avoid mold and black spot.

(land people call this same idea "declination") Chart compass roses are often used with a parallel rule. For example, lie any edge of the parallel rule from where you are to where you want to go. Walk it so that one edge goes through the x in middle of both compasses roses. You can now read your bearing magnetic on the inner rose and your true bearing on the outer rose. Point a hand baring compass or orienteering compass so that the magentic bearing is inline and it will be pointing at where you want to go, or if you are in a ship with a ship's compass turn the ship until the magnetic number you read is presented on the ships compass and you will be heading in the right direction.

Northeast is halfway between north and east, southeast is halfway between south and east, southwest is halfway between south and west, and northwest is halfway between north and west.
Now comes the (relatively) tricky part. North-northeast is halfway between north and northeast, east-northeast is halfway between east and northeast, east-southeast is halfway between east and southeast, south-southeast is halfway between south and southeast, south-southwest is halfway between south and southwest, west-southwest is halfway between west and southwest, west-northwest is halfway between west and northwest, and north-northwest is halfway between north and northwest.
Degrees are as follows:
N=360/0
NNE=22.5
NE=45
ENE=67.5
E=90
ESE=112.5
SE=135
SSE=157.5
S=180
SSW=202.5
SW=225
WSW=247.5
W=270
WNW=292.5
NW=315
NNW=337.5
N, E, S, and W are usually the biggest on a compass rose. The next biggest are NE, SE, SW, and NW. NNE, ENE, ESE, SSE, SSW, WSW, WNW, and NNW are the smallest points.

Reply:As mentioned in the two answers above, compass roses indicate direction. However, you may have noticed most nautical charts have two compasses roses, one inside the other. The outer rose is based on true north - North on it points to the north pole. The inner rose is based on magnetic north (where your compass points, the islands of northern Canada). The difference is refered to as magnetic variation which is expressesed as an angle east or west and will vary depending where on the earth you are.
